Starlight Networks Provides the Video Networking Capability for Lotus
Video for Notes
January 23, 1995, Orlando, FL -- Starlight Networks today announced that
its video server software provides video networking capability to Lotus
Video for Notes. While Video for Notes allows full-motion video to be added
to Notes applications, Starlight Networks' products manage the storage and
playback of that video over enterprise networks. Video for Notes provides
a sophisticated tool for easily developing workgroup video applications,
thus opening up a new category of workgroup communications applications.
Initially, Video for Notes works with Starlight's StarWare(r) NLM-based
video server software, to distribute the video content over Novell NetWare
LANs. Video for Notes will support Starlight's StarWorks' video server software
in a subsequent release. StarWare runs on a NetWare server, providing storage
management for video content and reliable delivery of full-motion video
over Ethernet, Token-Ring, and FDDI networks. The StarWare video server
is accessed by the Video for Notes server to deliver video streams to users,
and to replicate video content to other Notes sites.
"This is the first example of server-to-server communications involving
video, where the video server interfaces with an applications server to
integrate video with other database and applications data," said Jim
Long, president of Starlight Networks. "It represents an important
advancement in networked, video-based communications. And Video for Notes
provides the application development platform for users to easily develop
video applications." Jeff Papows, vice president of the Communications
Products Group for Lotus Development Corporation said, "Starlight Networks
gives us the ability to deliver video to Notes users, through Video for
Notes. With Video for Notes, the range of possibilities for new workgroup
video applications is tremendous." As Video for Notes capabilities
expand to support other platforms, StarWorks(r) and StarWare will provide
video networking support for these environments as well. StarWorks and StarWare
support all the popular video formats for DOS and Windows PCs and Macintosh
systems. StarWorks is an open systems solution that supports multiple server
platforms and other network operating systems, such as LAN Manager, Banyan
VINES, and NFS, in addition to NetWare.
Starlight Networks is located at 205 Ravendale Drive, Mountain View, CA
